HIMSS Analytics Honors Clara Barton Hospital with Stage 6 Recognition
April 18, 2018
Clara Barton Hospital was recently recognized by HIMSS Analytics for achieving Stage 6 on the EMR Adoption ModelSM (EMRAM). Since their conversion to the Cerner Electronic Health Records System in the fall of 2016, Clara Barton Hospital has been working hard to make changes and adaptions to better utilize their new electronic records system.
HIMSS Analytics developed the EMR (electronic medical record) Adoption Model in 2005 as a method of evaluating the progress and impact of electronic medical record systems for hospitals across the United States. HIMSS Analytics tracks each hospital’s progress in completing the eight stages (0-7) in the EMR Model. The model helps analyze how well hospitals are using their electronic medical records system with 0 being the lowest level and 7 the highest achievable mark. The model provides criteria for each designated stage and helps guide hospitals to meet the criteria necessary to reach stage 7.
Clara Barton Hospital currently uses Cerner facility-wide, which is a health information system that creates and stores each patient’s medical records electronically. This system allows providers and other healthcare team members in both the hospital and clinics to access the patient’s medical records at the touch of a finger.
“The conversion to a system that is as robust and integrated as Cerner was a huge undertaking for our entire organization,” said Rebecca Moore, Clara Barton Hospital Information Technology Project Manager. “Our staff helped build the system, evaluated and redesigned workflows and had endless collaborative discussions to understand how the Cerner processes in one department affected other departments. The transformation that took place in our facility was truly amazing.”
Prior to the Cerner conversion, Clara Barton Hospital was meeting some of the criteria for HIMSS stage 4 and some of the criteria for stage 5, but never enough to receive a stage 4 or 5 designation. The addition of Cerner helped Clara Barton to achieve many of those goals straight out of the gate and aided the organization in meeting many of the requirements necessary for the HIMSS EMR stage 6 achievement.
